Among Us in Minecraft

Among Us has been quite a topic for conversations this past year. The game itself has come out in 2018, but 2020 was when it genuinely blew up. It’s a mafia-like game in which you assume a role of an innocent crewmate just trying to go by or an impostor, whose goal is to slaughter everyone on the map.

The game’s minimalistic design and nature made it very easy for modders to imagine how Among Us could be reinvented in Minecraft. As a result, several very appealing modifications and add-ons have been developed recently.

Some of them are quite lacking details, while others are huge projects with (often) dedicated servers. Performium is one of such beginnings – a uniquely developed Among Us add-on is the only gamemode featured.

Performium has been amongst the first servers to implement a dedicated Among Us minigame. At the moment of creation (October 2020), the server’s goal was to create an Among Us experience as seamlessly as possible.

Later on, the staff also included the usual survival and other mods, but the Among Us minigame is still their bread and butter. The mod is not very heavy detail-wise: the maps mostly use the blocks from vanilla Minecraft besides several exceptions (equipment, shelves, tables, and so on).

The add-on genuinely feels like a gamemode inside Minecraft, and not like a modification that turns MC into AU. For instance, you can still use your own skin during the game sessions. Similarly to the lack of unique blocks and textures, it’s likely done on purpose as to not overload your game.

At the start of each game, you can customize your color (choose a leather armor of specific color) and some other details. If you’d like to improve your experience even more, you can pick a Minecraft skin that resembles a crewmate. We have a few of these in our collection.

If you’re playing as a crewmate, you’re given a tool that describes your current task and a compass that leads to it. The tasks also use the blocks and features from base Minecraft, but the essence is the same.

The voting mechanism is done through an item that looks like a book. Once ‘read’, you can pick the color of the most likely impostor to vote for their expulsion.

So, it’s a simplistic add-on, but it’s very clever at using the few features it has.
